What ARE they?

We have a tree with leaves like an apple tree on the way from the house to the potager. The blossom looked quite like apple too, but when it set fruit they didn't really look like apples. The fruit look kind of appley but not entirely.

We thought maybe they were crab apples because they were much smaller than apples. But the end just didn't look right. We thought maybe they were quinces as they are related to apples but we couldn't find any tell of mini quinces.
Eventually we decided to cook some up and see if they went pink like quince does. They smelt like a combination of pears and apples when being heated (with maybe a hint of sloe). I searched for poisonous fruit like apples and couldn't find any. Then by accident when looking for quince jelly recipes I saw a photo that looked just like them. They are medlars!
So we are making medlar jelly with those we had picked and plan to make more with the others. People also let them blet and eat them raw. We will give that a go with a few too.
