Digging and planting the Potager

As mentioned in a previous entry Doug dug a patch for potatoes. What I didn't mention then was the giant effort to get that patch dug. It involved
  1. digging out the turf
  2. breaking up the ground underneath
  3. digging out some earth
  4. putting the turf back upside down
  5. putting back the soil.
The result was good, but there was no way we were going to get anything much planted this year with all the other stuff we have to do.
We found the pigs destroyed ground much faster than we had thought they would, so we moved them up on the the 'veg garden to be' a while ago (mentioned briefly with pic here). They have been progressing well and have destroyed enough for us to start digging and getting some other veg in.

We first had to rake up the dug up grass they had left behind. They do eat quite a lot of the grass and seem to love it but they didn't clear everything. It seems they don't like docks particularly for some reason.

(As you can see we have moved the pigs along once they had finished a particular area and the area they are on will be done soon too. There is more grass waiting for them beyond.)

Then it was time to dig the first few plots. It was much easier now there is no grass cover and roots binding it all together.
