We have had three theories about what it is
1.) Orf - kind of like sheep chicken pox (catch-able by humans). V gross looking - don't look at pictures on the internet
2.) Scabies - caused by a mite. Also gross and don't look at pictures
3.) A reaction to a plant or fungus around at this time of year. A friend with goats told us about this today which was a relief as the other things are more horrible! Her description sounded exactly like we are seeing with a surface on the scabs that looks like loads of pollen. I can't really find any info about it on the internet so we may consult the vet in case we should treat in some way. It was something to do with the liver excreting toxins and coming out like this - which does sound very unlikely but I have read some similar sounding things.
